New ministry in Mae Hong Son 1. January 2007 started AIDS Care a ministry in Mae Hong Son - a town close to the Burmese border in Northern Thailand. A local church is involved the ministry. The church is a Shan church, called Napajat church, in the village of Napajat, Maehongson. It is an ACT church planted about 20 years ago by Anna Capon. After she left the village a number of families fell away, and only one family remained faithful to the Lord. Toi's father and older brother were the two main believers for some time. Her step-mother, herself, her husband and her younger brother followed, and were those who were members when they asked OMF to send missionaries to live in the village again. Don and Martha Wilson were asked to live and work there for the last three years of their time in Thailand before they retired. Under their ministry, the church grew to a regular congregation of about 15 adults and a few children. Another missionary family joined the Wilsons for the last 9 months of their ministry and continued to work there for a further 7 years. During that time we saw the Lord at work, through many ups and downs, and the church grew, to its present number of about 35 - 40 baptised believers. There is a regular congregation of about 45 people worshipping together. The majority of these are people who don't have land and money. They live by working for others, and if they don't work they don't eat. Those who have their own land are able to grow enough to live on, but could not be considered wealthy. The normal weekly giving to the Lord amounts to about 250 Baht per week (total). The AIDS care work will be mainly with Shan people, as there are not many Thai people in the area, and they tend to be wealthier, government workers, etc. If there are other ethnic groups, eg Karen, with need then AIDS Care will include them. |
